Thanksgiving day and the weekend that follows are the perfect time to knock off some of the easy marketing To Do’s that we never seem to be able to justify completing during the usual busy weeks, no matter how valuable they could be for us. If you’re like me, you will spend much of the weekend lounging around, hanging out with family, watching football, and every once in a while, when you need an escape, pulling out your computer or iPad. You’ll (sort of) want to do something to further your practice, but maybe you’re just a bit sleepy or lethargic from the turkey and the stuffing. I have the solution for you! Tackle these To Do’s in mini-sittings throughout the weekend and set yourself up early for 2012.
- Make a Video. You’ll have the camera out to record the kids or grandkids, so why not? Use your iPhone, your computer’s webcam, or a handheld version. Set it up so you can sit or stand in front of it and introduce your practice. Forget about compliance or saying the right thing for this “take.” Simply record yourself speaking ad hoc about the audience you serve and how you help them. - Boost Your Rank. Are you in the top directories? If not, you should be. Give your website more exposure in those enviable search rankings. Create detailed and descriptive profiles on each site. These are all free, and you can complete most of them in 10 minutes or less (like during halftime!).

- Title 10 Articles: You don’t have to write them, just create the titles for 10 articles (or blog posts) that your ideal client would want to read. Be specific, and let go of limitations of what you should write to sound like a financial adviser. Rather, think about what is interesting that you could share your perspective on. Some examples might include: What to Expect the First Two Weeks of Retirement, A Single Woman’s Guide to Buying a Car, How to Leave Everything to Your Grandkids (and What That Means for Your Estate). Save the actual writing of the articles until after the holiday.
And if you get stir crazy, here’s one last bonus To Do: surf the net. Pretend you are your target audience. What blogs are targeted to them? (Search for your niche in Google—the popular blogs will pop up.) Keep track along with contact information of the author. You can reach out to these sites with guest blog posts when you have your articles ready to go.
Of course, you may just choose to relax and recharge this weekend instead. Be grateful for the break and have another piece of pie.
