How to Get Links to Your Website

We are just about finished with this series on how search engines work. We’ve covered how Google ranks results, and how to make your website search-engine friendly. The last topic is how to get links to your website.  

If you remember back to my first post, when a website links to your site, that acts like a vote of confidence. But not all votes are equal. If your best friend links to your site from his personal blog that only about three people read, it won’t have near the same weight as if a high-quality website like CNN links to you. The link from your best friend’s blog is good, it just won’t help as much as a high-quality link.  

I’m going to cover two strategies to help get links to your website.  

1. Have high-quality content on your site that people want to link to. If your website looks like every other financial planning website, people will have little reason to link to you. But if you can add articles or tools that are useful to others, people will want to share them with others. Say, for example, you wrote a series of short but useful articles about saving for your kids college. This is a topic that many people will be interested in, and if the article is good, people will want to share it with others.  

 This process is called organic linking and is the best method for long-term success. But it also takes time to build links organically.  

 2. You can also build links through online press releases. This is a fairly simple way to quickly build quality links to your website. I personally like the site http://www.prlog.org/. They offer a free press release service. In the press release you are allowed to include up to three links.  

I doubt anyone reads the press releases I’ve submitted, but that isn’t the point. For instance, I wrote a press release talking about a series of free seminars I’m offering in Denver.  This press release allowed me to link to my website homepage and the page on my site where I list upcoming seminars. Now those two pages have a better chance of showing up in relevant Google searches.  

You shouldn’t abuse press releases, because it will likely hurt you in the long run. But if you have something happening in your business that’s worth telling others about, write a press release.
